Designer Halston’s queer life explored in new Netflix limited series
Halston stars Ewan McGregor as the iconic gay designer of the same name who rose to international fame with a worldwide fashion empire that became synonymous with luxury, sex, status, and fame in 1970s and 1980s New York. It is the fourth in a series of Netflix releases from LGBTQ+ mastermind Ryan Murphy.
Despite the controversy surrounding his hiring (straight actors playing gay characters), McGregor gives a career-best performance as the ringleader of “a bunch of gays and freaks and girls who haven’t grown up yet.” It’s not a flawless series by any means, but it’s an intriguing look into the fashion industry, how to build an empire, and how to become one of the industry’s most respected designers.
