Gay horror films to scare you this Halloween
One often overlooked sub-genre of gay cinema is horror, and it’s no surprise given how few films have been made over the years. But many are good and scary movies that place gay men as the lead characters rather than as extras often killed off. There are many lists pointing out the most homoerotic horror films , but few other sites share a list of the best gay horror films.
Let’s break gay horror into a few groups: vampires, pure-horror & thrillers, and mainstream horror. Why have we broken out gay vampire films? Well the sheer number of gay vampires movies sets this sub-genre apart.
Sadly many of these films are not easily available. We tried to point where to find every film as best we could. And none of these films are available on Netflix (as of writing) which sucks.
Horror & thrillers
Hellbent
It’s Halloween in West Hollywood when two guys making out in a park are interrupted by a serial killer. Later that night, a group of gay kids decide to visit to the site of the murders.
The Dark Place
Sean Paul Lockhart (Brent Corrigan) stars in this independent thriller. Keegan Dark (Blaise Embry) returns to the heart of California’s winery valleys to make peace with his long-estranged family. Instead, he finds a harrowing mystery that endangers his family’s lives and livelihood.
Tripled Crossed
Directed by Sean Paul Lockhart, Triple Crossed is another sexual thriller worth a watch. A man is out to kill a person he swore on his best friend’s death bed to protect. Chris Jensen (Jack Brockett) is torn between his allegiance to his fallen friend, Tyler Townsend (Addison Graham), who died in Afghanistan and Tyler’s half sister who hires Chris to kill her late brother’s gay lover. The lover, Andrew Warner (Sean Paul Lockhart), stands to inherit half of the family’s multi-million dollar company left to him by Tyler. Tyler’s half sister Jackie Townsend (Laura Reilly) has other plans for the young and unassuming Andrew. All goes to plan even though Chris has fallen in love with the young Andrew. Andrew grows suspicious, the plan is revealed and it’s every man and woman for themselves. A fortune will go to the last one standing.
Kiss Me, Kill Me
While confronting his unfaithful boyfriend, Dusty blacks-out. When he comes to, his boyfriend was murdered and he’s the prime suspect. But West Hollywood is filled with suspects: an unstable lawyer, a couples’ therapist, a jealous ex, a sketchy best friend, a resentful lesbian couple, and a drag queen hypnotist. Now Dusty must put all the pieces together, even if it means he’s guilty of murder.

Gay Vampires
Deserving of its own sub-genre, Gay vampire films are the biggest theme in the gay horror genre, and it’s no surprise since gay vampires are hot as hell. Beautiful & youngful, immortal, sexy, and excellent seducers, vampires are a perfect fit for gay men. There was even a gay vampire series on Here, The Lair, featuring fanged boys hiding in a sex club.
Kissing Darkness
Yet another film with Sean Paul Lockhart in the cast, Kissing Darkness is a horror film taking a new spin on the vampire genre. Unlike many of the other obvious vampire-themed films, Kissing Darkness didn’t bill itself as such, and there’s less fang action than others in this category.
A group of LA boys bored with ‘gay life’ skip pride for a weekend in the country. There they unleash an evil spirit that seeks revenge through the boys.

Bite Marks
While Bite Marks contains no gay vampires, the two main characters are gay and face monster-like vampires.
Bite Marks is a gay-themed horror-comedy about truck driver Brewster (Benjamin Lutz) carrying a load of coffins to a funeral home who picks up two hitch hikers, gay-couple Cary (Windham Beacham) and Vogel (David Alanson). When Brewster’s GPS gets them lost and they end up broken down in a junkyard after sunset, we discover that the coffins aren’t empty. As night falls blood thirsty vampires emerge from the coffins and the trio must protect themselves and try to survive until dawn.

Scab
Sadly this indie film is hard to come by, but it’s probably one of the most unique vampire films, gay or straight, around. The filmmaker explored vampirism as a by-product of rape. Add in a love triangle of pent up desire and a road trip, and you have something dark and sexy. Don’t expect a happy ending.
